Hi Nick and Julie,

Revised again! Per your request I’ve made the distant sea less periwinkle and added color variations to suggest movement. I like these changes and I think it was a very good suggestion.

Here’s a webpage where you can view my photos of the four pieces. It’s still hard to know exactly how your paintings will look together. Unfortunately digital photography is no substitute for seeing artwork in person.

If you all are happy with “Vernazza from the Vineyard”, I can go ahead and varnish it and frame it. Or, if you would like to see all your paintings together before I do that, I can bring this one next Tuesday afternoon 5/26 and do the final stages at your house. Of course, that’s if you’re available. Thoughts?

Best regards,

Linda

Latest revision, “Vernazza from the Vineyards”

Hi Nick and Julie,

I’ve finished your painting of Vernazza! I’m very pleased with it and I hope you all are too. This is how I incorporated your comments:

  • I reduced the distant sea less saturated and less bright

  • I made the painting generally warmer in the foreground, vineyard, rooftops, pavement on right, & waterfront area

  • I made the foreground buildings darker to unify them.

I think this painting will look great with the three you already have and will complete the set. I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Best regards,

Linda

Final painting “Vernazza from the Vineyards”

4/15/26

Hi Nick and Julie,

I’ve made a lot of progress on your painting of Vernazza. I wanted to give you a progress report and get your input.

The painting is blocked in and I’m more than halfway on the details. Below are areas I’ll be sure to add a bit of detail:

  • Foreground plants

  • Mid ground vineyard on the left

  • Far right castle

  • Mid ground buildings

  • Road on the right

  • Foreground boats

  • Church tower and side facing the harbor.

Thoughts? Anything that doesn’t feel quite right? I look forward to hearing what you all think!

I’m leaving for Portugal on Sunday and I’ll be gone for two weeks, so I’ll be restarting my work the week of May 4.

Best regards,

Linda

Progress of your painting.

Hi Nick and Julie,

This is your webpage where we’ll communicate while I’m creating your commission. You may want to bookmark it, since you can’t reach this page through my nav bar.

Below is the original image you gave me, a cropped 8x10” version to match your other paintings, and a value sketch for your approval.

For me, the value sketch is the foundation of any painting. I use shapes and values to design the viewer’s initial impression of the painting and to move their eye around the canvas.

These were my objectives as I created this design in four values: lightest, light, medium-dark, and darkest)

  • The two focal points are the nearby church tower and the distant castle turret.

  • The bright roofs of Vernazza houses contrast with the buildings’ deep shadows, and create an interesting pattern across the village.

  • The hillside at the left and the sea beyond feel more distant that the village.

  • The grasses in the foreground give us a sense of standing above the village.

I hope you like this sketch and that it makes you look forward to the painting. Please let me know your thoughts!
