Dear Julie,
I thought you might like to view my progress on your painting. This is my block-in, where I’ve just put down the main colors in big strokes. This way I can see the painting as a whole and start to make the many refinements that we lead to your final painting.
You can see it already has the sense of warm sunshine and dark, cool shadows. : )
All comments welcome!
Warmly, Linda

Dear Julie,
Here is the digital value sketch that I mentioned., which simplifies the design to five values. It helps me to make the design of the painting as powerful as possible. For instance, I made the grays on the shadows of the house darker so that the whites are more prominent. And I eliminated the driveway so that we’ll have more green lawn.
As far as color, I’ll pretty much stick to the colors in the photo. I won’t be including the holiday decorations, but I would like to add some pots of flowers on the porch for bright colors, or maybe some planted in the front beds. Are you okay with that? Do you have a preference for flower colors?
Warmly, Linda

Dear Julie,
Welcome to your webpage, where we’ll keep a record about our decisions on your commissioned painting of your beautiful home. Below is the photo I’m suggesting that we use. I like it because:
The shape of the house fits nicely in the picture frame, and will be dominant in the painting.
The house it viewed from an angle, which is more interesting than straight on.
The roofline angles are interesting.
It’s welcoming because the front door is clearly visible.
The dark trees on the left are a nice contrast to the white house.
The front face is in sunlight but the face on the right side is in shadow, which is an interesting contrast.
Do you like this view? If so I can get started on the value plan (black/grey/white) for your approval. If not, let me know what’ concerns you have and I can give you an alternative. I look forward to hearing from you!
All the best,
Linda
